TALE OF THE THREE JEWELS (+ SCREEN TALK)
MICHEL KHLEIFI | 1995 | 112’

WEDNESDAY 24 NOVEMBER | 20:30
BARBICAN CINEMA, SILK STREET, EC2Y 8DS

From veteran director Michel Khleifi, is a tale of innocence, love and imagination set against a backdrop of conflict and occupation. Tale of the Three Jewels tells the story of twelve-year-old Yusef, who escapes from the chaos by looking for birds in the Gaza countryside. One day his hunt is interrupted by Aida, a beautiful gypsy girl from a nearby neighbourhood. Immediately smitten, Yusef declares his intention of making her his bride. However, she says he must first find the three jewels missing from a necklace brought from South America by her grandfather. Yusef must draw the plan to cross the sea to fulfil Aida's request and win her love. Known to be the first feature ever filmed in the Gaza Strip, Khleifi affectively uses the grim backdrop as contrast for a whimsical story of romantic longing and the power of imagination.

This session will be followed by a screen talk with Michel Khleifi, director of Tale of the Three Jewels and Kaleem Hawa, poet and film writer.
