Gathered from all around the world, Israelis today are united by an “official” collective memory that led to the  national formation of Israel. How has this collective memory developed? What are the symbols that contribute to its strength? And to what purpose is it being used?

Izkor, meaning ‘to remember’ in Hebrew, offers humanistic and pragmatic answers to these questions. From kindergarten to the army, we follow Israelis as they grow up, to better understand how every citizen is imbued with this “official memory”. A succession of real time events, places and people, together reveal the intricacies of what can be called “dictatorship of the memory”. Directed by award-winning Israeli director, Eyal Sivan, we witness a rediscovery of the myths and symbols that contributed to the making of his own identity, as well as that of every Israeli.

This screening will be followed by a screen talk with the director, Eyal Sivan.
